De Zingende Strijkstok (The Singing Bow)

De Zingende Strijkstok (The Singing Bow) is a continuation of the touching performance Troubadours, which told the story of plucked string instruments from various cultures. In this new production, bowed string instruments take center stage, in a unique collaboration with NBE.

Two talented, classically trained cellists lead the way: Franco-Algerian Nesrine and Dutch-Japanese-Brazilian Chieko Donker Duyvis. Both have found their voices during their musical journeys and now combine their cello playing with singing. The third remarkable guest musician is Enkhjargal Dandarvaanchig, better known as Epi. He plays the traditional Mongolian Morin Khuur and is a master of Mongolian throat singing.

Three unique musicians, each bringing their own cultural roots to life through their music. Together with the distinctive NBE, they create an inspiring mix of sounds that transcends boundaries and deeply touches the listener.

Composer Florian Maier wrote the opening piece of this performance, titled Pangeans. In this work, all three guest musicians sing and play together. Pangeans not only refers to the ancient supercontinent but also to the idea that the world should be a place for everyone. As Maier puts it:

“We musicians might be the largest tribe on Earth. We have no country of our own, but we speak a language that unites us all, whether we communicate with words or with our instruments. We complement each other, inspire each other, and share joy with one another and with the rest of the world.”

Based on an original concept by Bart Schneemann

Prior to the performance, there will be an introduction by musicologist Huib Ramaer. The introduction is free of charge, but in some venues, you may need to make a reservation (check the theater websites for more information).
