Bart de Kater (1986) completed his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in clarinet, graduating cum laude from the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, where he studied with Herman Braune, Harmen de Boer, and Arno Piters. During his studies, he founded the Nieuw Amsterdams Klarinet Kwartet. Since 2021, he has also been a clarinetist with the reed quintet Calefax.
As a musician, Bart enjoys bridging the gap to music theater and has collaborated with theater companies such as Speeltheater Holland, De Toneelmakerij, Ulrike Quade Company, and De Nationale Opera. In addition to classical music, Bart also has a strong interest in folk music and plays the kaval and the gaida, a traditional Bulgarian shepherd’s flute and bagpipe. Bart is a member of the Nederlands Blazers Ensemble and has toured in Jordan, Israel, Turkey, Poland, and China.
Since 2017, Bart has been teaching in the Young Talent program at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and is a principal instructor at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. When the weather is good and the wind is right, Bart can be found sailing his boat across the Waterland lakes near his hometown Monnickendam.
