Set in Scotland, this composition follows Calder, a grieving boy. His girlfriend, Isla, died in a tragic car crash. Insomniac and heartbroken, Calder spends nights under their favourite weeping willow - the spot of their very first date. One night, Isla appears to him as a translucent spirit. Though unsettled, his love prevails and he embraces her. They meet nightly until Isla grows fainter, warning she needs his life force to exist. Calder immediately promises anything to keep her. On a full moon, she leads him to a circle of weeping willows for a ritual. His body freezes and dies, but his spirit is preserved. His family finds his frozen body in the summer with a peaceful smile. While everyone is devastated, the story ends with the spirits of Calder and Isla walking hand in hand, deep into the forest, reunited forever.
P.S. In the 1920s, the first Mickey Mouse animations were made, like Steamboat Willie. In those movies each tiny thing was highlighted by the music. I used the technique in this piece to highlight actions to fit the vibe of the 1920s; nowadays, this technique is called Mickey Mousing. My favourite piece from the 1920s is the Silly Symphony "The Skeleton Dance“!
