Desert Blues

At the invitation of The Hunger Project, an international organisation committed to ending world hunger, our musicians travelled to Benin, land of dancers, singers, percussion virtuosos and voodoo music. Performing together with them was a festive, once-in-a-lifetime experience. Like the previous trips (to Surinam, Cuba and Georgia), the visit to West Africa resulted in a beautiful musical programme. The musician friends we made in Benin will now pay a virtual or real-life visit to the Netherlands to create ‘Desert Blues’ together with the NWE: a fiery spectacle that transcends borders and genres.

Tournee China

Van 8 t/m 16 december tourt het NBE door China. Het is de allereerste keer dat het NBE in dit fascinerende land optredens verzorgt in vijf verschillende steden, achtereenvolgens Tianjin, Beijing, Jinan, Suzhou en Shanghai. Naast de concerten en een aantal flash mobs ter promotie hiervan, geven de blazers ook diverse workshops en masterclasses op scholen en wordt er samengespeeld met veelbelovende jonge Chinese musici. Das Lied von der Erde

Leonard Bernstein called Mahler’s ‘Das Lied von der Erde’ his greatest symphony. Mahler composed this symphonic song cycle after a personal annus horibilis (1907), in which he lost his daughter, was fired as director of the Vienna Opera, and suffered from poor health. A sympathetic friend gave him a bundle of poems based on ancient Chinese poetry, which roused the composer inside him. Das Lied von der Erde celebrates life and death in the form of an ode to nature. The Netherlands Wind Ensemble has not changed a single one of Mahler’s notes, but the performance is entirely unique.
