Keti Koti, a Surinamese term, means “Broken Chains.”
It symbolizes the abolition of slavery on July 1, 1863, in the former colonies of Suriname and the Dutch Antilles — marking the end of a dark chapter in Dutch history.
With the annual Keti Koti Festival on July 1, immediately following the commemoration ceremony in Amsterdam’s Oosterpark, we celebrate freedom, equality, and solidarity.
Through highlights from our Surinamese programme A Firi Fu Fri – The Feeling of Freedom — we reflect on the past while looking ahead to the future with hope.
Let yourself be carried away by rhythms, songs, and harmonies that move and unite. Join in the celebration with our special guests: Surinamese singers Denise Jannah and Jeannine la Rose, together with the men of the close-harmony group Black Harmony.
