An Ode to Gia Kancheli

The NBE brings a tribute in a theatrical show to an old friend: Georgian composer Gia Kancheli, who sadly passed away in 2019. Kancheli’s music is spiritual, sometimes almost cinematic, but always with a nod to his beloved homeland Georgia. The NBE will play the unknown masterpiece ‘Magnum Ignotum’ and ‘Miniatures’. Kancheli wrote his tranquil Miniatures for violin and piano, adapted it himself for viola and string orchestra and also made it known that he wished the pieces would be adapted for other instruments. Dutch composers adapted parts of Kancheli’s cycle specially for the NBE. In consequence, the entire palette of the NBE will be heard, and by doing so, the musicians will cast a nostalgic light on the heavenly Georgian sounds.
