Description
The leitmotiv of the 2001 New Year Concert by the Nederlands Blazers Ensemble and the VPRO was Love: Love, Longing and Loss, explored not just in music and song but in letters and poetry as well. On January 1, words of passion tumbled through the air of the Main Hall of the Concertgebouw on wings of music. Two remarkable veterans of both love and music starred as the concert’s own Romeo and Julia: Portuguese singer Maria Amélia Proença and Guinean jazz musician Momo Wandel Soumah. The Nederlands Blazers Ensemble had also invited children between the ages of 6 and 15 to write music for the concert; works by eight of these very young composers were given pride of place.
