On the occasion of his seventieth birthday, the Netherlands Wind Ensemble asked Dutch composer and jazz musician Theo Loevendie to work together on a programme.
Window Facing South is a recording of a concert that took place at Amsterdam’s Paradiso on 16 February 2001. The concert was part of a Dutch tour that brought the Netherlands Wind Ensemble and Theo Loevendie together with Luna’s Fridge, Mala Sangre, and Yarky’n.
Window Facing South is first and foremost a musical memoir, taking as its point of departure Loevendie’s childhood in the Kinkerbuurt, a working class district of Amsterdam. From there it goes to the jazz cafes of Istanbul, Spanish girls in Amsterdam’s Vondelpark and the local jazz venue the Bimhuis, before ending up in the Concertgebouw.
The programme blends all these disparate elements together into a single, ambitious composition.
